Featured as one of opera’s 25 Rising Stars in Opera News, American Baritone David Pershall has been seen at some of the world’s foremost theaters including the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and Washington National Opera. He debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 2015 as Figaro in The Barber of Seville, which he quickly followed with performances in 2016 as Schaunard in La Bohème, and Lord Cecil in Maria Stuarda.
David has been seen at the Vienna State Opera as Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Sebastian in The Tempest, and Lescaut in Manon Lescaut. He made his role debut as Rodrigo in Don Carlos with Opera Burg Gars in 2015 and was acclaimed as a “swashbuckling Rodrigo” in NÖN, as well as a “cultured singing, young, attractive Posa” in Der Neue Merker. He made his role debut as Lord Nottingham in Roberto Devereux at Carnegie Hall for which he was hailed as “passionate and resonant” by The New York Times.
He has also appeared at Sarasota Opera as Count di Luna in ll Trovatore, Washington National Opera as Papageno in The Magic Flute, Florida Grand Opera as Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Minnesota Opera as Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, Virginia Opera as Zurga in Les pêcheurs de perles, and with the Norwegian National Opera as Schaunard in La Bohème.
Mr. Pershall is proud of his partnership with the Beethoven Easter Festival and the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Together they have produced three live performance albums in which he headlined as Don Pedro in Maria Padilla, Manfredo in L’Amore dei Tre Re, and Orestes in Iphigénie en Tauride. He has appeared on TV as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor which was broadcast live on PBS.
He has won many prestigious vocal competitions including The 2016 George London Award sponsored by the Lloyd E. Rigler-Lawrence E. Deutsch Foundation, 1st Prize in the Marcello Giordani Foundation International Vocal Competition, 1st Prize in the New Jersey Verismo Competition, 1st Prize in the Fritz and Lavinia Jensen Foundation Competition, 1st Prize in the Gerda Lissner Foundation, 1st Prize in the Connecticut Opera Guild Competition, 1st Prize in the Hugo Kauder Competition for Voice, the Presser Music Foundation Award, and the Thomas Stewart Award for Vocal Excellence. His other awards include prizes in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Giulio Gari Foundation Competition, the Opera Index Competition, the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation, and an Artist Grant Award from the National Bel Canto Vocal Competition.
David is a graduate of the Merola Opera program at San Francisco Opera and the Virginia Opera Resident Artist program. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Baylor University, as well as a Master of Music and an Artist Diploma from Yale School of Music.
